The Double Edged Sword

I am speaking, my friends, of the trusty library reserve list. While I will never have a shortage of things to read thanks to my multiple sources of free kindle books from Amazon reads and the like, the reserve list includes books I want and am looking forward to-and sometimes waiting impatiently for.

Until, that is the feast or famine rule comes into play and five, count them five, books free up on the same day.

I mean, I easily read more than two books a week more often than not, but with a three week checkout period and no renewal, I either need to speed up my reading (not necessarily a problem) or delay the books which can mean going back to the end of the list, depending. So I’ll be reading, and reading some more for the next couple of weeks.

Perpetuating my problem is the fact that I have recently added more books to my list, and more than a few are of the not mindless reading variety. The new Barbara Kingsolver (Demon Copperhead) is now on the list, Sea of Tranquility (a sequel to Station 11), Less Is Lost, The Candy House, and others sit alongside the new Jane Harper, the newest in the Joe Pickett series and the new Thomas Perry novel (author of the Old Man for TV series types).  I have a never ending book list, and just a small part of it is on reserve at any time.

In the book to TV series trend, I have yet to watch Three Pines-and in this case I have never read the books. But I’m not one to shy away from the book to TV movement. I mean I am thrilled with both Bosch and the Lincoln Lawyer and surprisingly happy with Reacher, so why not. And starting yesterday (I think?) there is a Will Trent TV series, for those readers of Karen Slaughter. Which I will get to some day.

In other brief news, my creativity right now is in the organizational arena. I know, me and organization, right? But there were so many cut up projects and so many pieces of fabric from leftover projects that I have taken time away from making to prepare things to make-cutting fabric into usable squares and bagging projects and organizing paints and art journals to workable spaces.  There is hope, I tell myself.

This afternoon, I’m exploring the abilities of my new Samsung watch (away, Apple, away I say) and its “help I’ve fallen” and emergency settings. More on my new toy soon. And why is it I never feel old until I look at my hands?

  1. I lost a book in the cue I need to read by Monday book club. I'm hoping it'll be in today or tomorrow.

  2. Do you listen to books as well as read? I find them good listen to while getting ready in the morning or fixing food.

    1. I have not embraced listening to books. I need the print.

  3. I have the same problem of feast or famine with reserve books. The Three Pines series on Prime is pretty good, and I really enjoyed the Will Trent pilot, although the character is a bit more assertive than the print version. I've read all the Karin Slaughter novels. If you start from the beginning, Will Trent isn't in the first several books. The main character in all the books is a doctor named Sarah. I wonder if she'll be part of the TV series. Happy reading!

    1. If I recall, the books did not call to me. But I'll give the show some time.

  4. You're giving me a few new book ideas. Thanks! I am a Louise Penny fan. I watched the Amazon Three Pines version. It's okay. But if you aren't impressed don't let that stop you from reading the books. They're better.

  5. I understand completely about the feast or famine when it comes to books. I haven't read the Three Pines books, but I did enjoy the show.

Like you I am constantly trying to organize my sewing fabrics and yarns. I have now added in various items for my Cricut.... Must start to downsize very soon I think.

    God bless.

  6. I agree. The Inspector Gamache books are better, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the Three Pines TV series would not appeal to someone who hadn't read the books. I miss the books' focus on the other characters who live in Three Pines, the importance of their gathering places, etc.

    1. I think that the book characters are more likeable and in-depth than the Three Pines series, but I understand there is much less time in a TV series than a book series

  8. Feast or famine is right. I had three books come off of hold today (same rules as you: three weeks, no renewals). The funning things was I was #2 on the wait list with the first, #12 with the second, and #28 with the third book. Silly me, thinking they would show up one after the other. In the meantime I'm already reading two other books, although one is almost finished, so I have my work cut out for me in the next three weeks.

We're currently watching Emily in Paris on Netflix - very cute - but Three Pines is up next. It will be fun to compare and contrast (one of the books that arrived today is the next in the Gamache series).

  10. We watched Everything, Everywhere, All at Once with my husband really enjoyed. I liked Glass Onion. My son sent me the book, Being Mortal. I should read it.
