Finally!!! (A political post long over due)

And that's the way is it, as Walter Cronkite would say!

Honestly, I'll probably retract this later, but right now I don't give a whoop de doo if we get the Senate, because much of what needs to be done is the reversal of all the godawful executive orders (or the re-doing of the ones he cancelled). I do worry about who gets pardoned in the next couple of months and so on and so forth, as well as how much worse the pandemic gets, but for now I will be happy with what I've got, and pray alot between now and January.

A couple of thoughts, for both sides this morning (why aggravate some when I can irritate all the readers, after all, lol)

First of all,  I am a left wing radical Democrat. If I do a survey, I always answer "extreme" liberal. The only issues I stray from in that view are a couple of not in my back yard kind of things, defunding the police (it's the poor communities who are harmed), and any kind of boycott (they don't work and harm the average worker, not the company).  Many of my readers are the same.

But it absolutely HAS to be said.  The Democratic party needs to move to the center and they need to do it down, dirty, and quickly. Before the mid-term elections.  It is not unfair to say that we are out of the mainstream in so very many ways, from not understanding the average worker or farmer or person (especially younger working people, truth be told) to other, more serious issues. If we don't the other Trumps will be back, take the house and maybe the next election and nothing will get accomplished. Trump may have lost, but he got everyone else elected in the process, barring a couple senators in places like Colorado and Arizona (good bye and good luck Cory Gardner). He has helped the Republican party at large very much, and we are partly to blame for that.  We need to find middle ground.

Now, when it comes to the second point.. Some of my regular readers are going to be offended, probably enough to not return to this blog. If you leave, that's okay. I actually had a reader say she would not return once, because I made a five word or something compliment on how thrilled I was that my new (male) Governor had a "first man". She was appalled that I discussed "politics". Where I come from equality (be it race, gender or whatever), the right to health care, the right to not live in poverty and so on are human rights issues, not political ones. What has this got to do with anything?

Just this. You may not have known what Donald Trump was four years ago.  But you did this time, and you still voted for a man who promotes racism, who wants to remove protections for those who are gay and transgendered, who wants to remove a woman's control over her body, who promotes white supremacy, who is a thief and who has enriched himself by millions (gone from being broke to to the extreme other side in four years) at the expense of the taxpayers, who lied to you and probably extended the pandemic by months if not years. Never mind the fact that he is a morally corrupt human being.  Some of you did that because your only issue is abortion and are willing to sacrifice the rest of us for that holier than thou attitude. Some of you may have the same attitude towards race and gender that Trump does, which is frightening, but if you vote for him, I figure you believe as he does.

Multiple readers suggested to me that there were two "shitty" candidates, or both made them vomit. I'm sorry, but no. Joe Biden is an imperfect person. There are no perfect people, therefore there are no perfect presidents. What he is, however, is a decent human being who cares about others, as well as this country. He's not an amoral, unkind, totally evil person who apparantly doesn't even know how this country functions, in an election or otherwise. Good-bye to Trump and good riddance.

I probably should have said the second part of this missive long ago. As my daughter says, we can agree to disagree about books. But not about racism and evil, damn it.  I mainly held off political commenting during this election,  partly because of stress, and partly because I raged so much after the last one and it did no good to anyone. Thankfully we are in a different place.

And now, I am off to get dressed and do my happy dance since I have been glued to the TV all morning in my jammies (hey, it's Saturday)!! I may be serving of a small glass of real eggnog since I don't think there is any alcohol in the house after the move.

Oh, and one last thought:  God bless all those volunteer poll workers, mainly senior citizens, who have worked long hours, been shifted from polling pace to polling place by busses,  gone beyond their duty, and in the midst of all that in many states had to listen to loud, armed,  occasionally semi violent protesters right outside their door.

There is light ahead, people!

  2. Hear hear! Not to be forgotten the removal of Bill Barr, Pompeo, etc. at the same time. I for one have not given up on the Senate and am sending donations to the 2 Democratic candidates for Senate in Georgia as they have serious runoff elections yet to come.

  3. Well written and I totally agree with you too.

  4. I’m glad I got to read this in case you take it down (please don’t.) We have similar views. I feel like this nation can breathe again and actually have hope that we can start to fight this damn pandemic (and address so many other important issues) now that we have a rational adult in the office. I’ll take “don’t like everything he does” over “hate everything he does” any day. (And I think Kamala is going to be one active and vocal VP. WOOHOO!)

Celebrate! We’ve waited a long time for this.

  6. Thank you! I wouldn't say I am extremely liberal, but I am so anti this presidential administration and Senate they make my flesh crawl. We need to learn why though the nation is so divided-if not, we I guess assume 39% are racist and then my flesh crawls again.

  7. Amen! Very well said. I consider myself a centrist Democrat who swings both ways but I deeply believe in everything you said. I live deep in Trump country and I've experienced personal anxiety this year like none in my life. I have friends who are pissed and devastated and I don't get it. I, too, worry about pardons and damage in the coming months but I feel like a weight has been lifted. I feel hope again!

  8. It is such a relief to have hope that this country can move forward without the overgrown bully that has done everything to weaken democracy as well as humanity.

  9. Barb, as a Canadian watching what has occurred between our countries over the last 4 years, the constant tariffs and threats I am so glad that this will now change. While Biden might not be everybodies choice I think he is the choice that was necessary now. He is willing to work with all comers and that is what we all need.

    God bless.

  10. I'm not an extreme liberal but I'm most definitely liberal and I think your description of Trump is one of the most apt descriptions I have ever read. I'm so happy for your country (and for the world) to be rid of Trump and his toxic family!

  13. Well said. As a Canadian I can say that many of us also sighed with relief on the announcement today. Trump brought out the worst in people, and Biden and Harris have a big job ahead of them to bring some consensus. I've read and heard that they've already started working, with a Covid-19 task force to be announced tomorrow, as well as briefings on the economy.

Take care, enjoy your 'nog and do your happy dance! I'm there with you virtually - except for eggnog - can't stand the stuff. :p

  14. What a wonderful post. Please, don’t take it down. It’s the most accurate description of the drifter In the White House. It’s sad knowing what they know now, still over 70 millions voted for him. It makes no sense at all. Of course, he’s going to pardon all his criminal friends who help him steal the last election.

  15. Thank you for this admirable post! As much as I have enjoyed your various topics previously, this one takes Olympic Gold! And Juhli's comment about sending money to Georgia's Senate candidates for the run-off is great. I would like to add that I plan to send money to Stacey Abram's organization that got 800,00 new registered voters, thanks to a friend of mine pointing out how Stacey has proven she can get people to the polls! Voter turnout will be the key in January just as it was here in November.

    1. I try not to do that too often, but who know? thanks for stopping by. I think if he can bring common sense to a few topics, and reverse some of the pretty awful executive decisons in the next year, and get a stimulus going I would be happy with that for a start.

  18. I am very much a centrist and I agree with EVERYTHING you've written. I too hope you never take this down.

We must find that central ground and unite or as you said, the swing will be extreme right yet again and it will be uglier than these recent 4 years.

Cheers to Biden/Harris and the compassion, civility and class they bring to the WH!

  22. Great post! I'm a far left leftie. Biden wasn't my first pick, but he grew on me and after his speech last night, I really admire him and Kamala too. It was so nice to see joy and celebration on the TV last night instead of name calling and fear mongering. I feel sorry for people that enjoyed his hateful rhetoric. We are the party of love, inclusion, and acceptance of all people and hopefully the temp will lower in this country and we can return to some normalcy. Please don't take down this post. I just added you to my blog roll and hope my readers see it. Thank you. The future is starting to look bright for the first time in a very long time! :-)

    1. He's not the perfect guy, but he has like thirty years experience in government and I think that if nothing else we have learned that an outsider who doesnt know how government works cannot succeed. Trump made alot of executive decisions but othher than that got squat accomplished.

  23. I agree with everything you wrote. It will be wonderful to have a president who cares about our country and not just himself. Another long time reader but first time commenter.

  24. I'm with Clamco. I'm pretty far left on social issues & most fiscal issues, but also believe in overall balance. The Democrats have a lot of work to do to find the right balance over the next four years between those that are more centrist & those who would like to go further left (and, are representing their districts appropriately with the push to the left). I think the hard part is that what's considered very liberal in the US is not remotely liberal in the rest of the world.

I don't envy Joe. Biden wasn't my first pick, but I voted for him in the primaries (person I thought had the best chance of defeating Trump & unifying the nation) & again in the election last week. He has so much work to do on COVID, the economy, climate change & bringing the country back together. However, his speech yesterday gave me so much hope. He will be the president for all Americans, regardless of whether they voted for him or not. And, I can't believe what a core value that is & how much it's been missed.

  25. Like several of your commenters, I am a long time reader coming out of Lurkerville to express support for your election commentary. Welcome to Big Red Texas! What a change from Blue Colorado!! Yes, there are pockets of rational, progressive thought in the state but I live in ultra conservative west Texas. Yesterday my husband wanted to find the biggest Biden/Harris flag, drive around town in his Prius, honking the horn and trying to run super mega pickup trucks off the road. Instead we put our Stars and Stripes next to the mailbox and celebrated with a bit of bubbly.

I recognize several names of your commenters. I found my way to their blogs from your blog roll. I miss Ronni.

  26. I think the fact that so many of us are feeling like an enormous load of stress has been lifted from our lives is telling testament to the legacy of the 45th POTUS. It has been an absolutely awful four years, and I hope to never, ever live through such a time period again in my life.

Last night's Biden/Harris moment was an amazing, uplifting event. VP-elect Kamala Harris' beautiful speech set the tone for the night, and when she made reference to representing the future possibilities for little girls, and for people of color, I wept on behalf of my own beautiful granddaughters who are of mixed ethnicity, one half of which is brown. Their future now looks so much brighter than it did just one month ago. And President-elect Biden's speech was beyond magnificent.

There is so much work needing to be done, and both sides of the aisle will have to compromise, Republicans AND Democrats, if we are to move forward. The country resoundingly rejected Donald Trump, but they did not resoundingly reject the Republican platform as seen by the seats the party picked up in the Assembly, and the lack of an apparent Blue Wave in the Senate. I sincerely hope that the significance of that is not lost on the Democrats come January.

  27. Janette posted this, and it somehow went to the wrong page, so I am copying and pasting it here for her!

I genuinely, am delighted that you are so happy with the election of Biden. I really hope that the Democrats take the Senate as well. I am shocked that you feel that Democrats should tac to the middle- when they worked so hard to get to where they are.
I am more then happy to give a full progressive movement a try. We will no longer be in the East, but I think they need to make their case and stick to it.
As an real independent, I think it will be interesting to watch.
I Love a good pendulum swing!

  28. I, genuinely, am happy for you that Biden/Harris won. I hope that the Democrats get the Senate as well. Only with all three will we get a good test of what a progressive movement looks like. Change things up. Get the big businesses out of the legislature. Open up globally.
As an independent, I love to see the pendulum swing.
I hope that Democrats do not lose their way and tac to the middle just to pull in people they feel, down to their toes, do not know what they are doing. Work the system. If the progressive party is what people voted for, then it should continue to move forward. I Look forward to a President Biden and, most likely, a President Harris in a year or two.

  35. New reader, I came over from Belinda's blog.
Thank you for your post. I was a conservative until 2016 when the republicans went batshit crazy over Trump. Doubt if I will ever vote for another republican again. But I agree that the democrats need to move to the center. There is too much extremism on both sides, and I don't want to go back to the Trump era.
