My birthday is in September. Which means now that I'm back in my own world its time for my lab work, mammogram, bone density, skin test, and pelvic sonogram for starts. Tomorrow I'll need to carve out some tie to make appointments as well as get in my first real workout since leaving for said wedding.
It seems it's also time to offer up my arm (or arms) to the nice lady with the needle (the gal at my local Kroger affiliate does a really, really good job as a rule). The question is how, and in what order and what should I expect.
While I was in Texas, I got the call that I am due for my pneumonia booster shot. A darned good thing, because it wasn't on my radar and I would have completely forgotten about it. So yea, I need to go in possibly tomorrow and get the shot.
Only. I also need my flu shot-and would prefer to offer only one arm up at a time if I can. So which priority? Flu or Pneumonia? Both? I suppose I'll go with the recommendation of my friendly neighborhood pharmacist. Probably.
And then of course there's the shingles shot. The new shingles shot that is. Like many of you, I had the old shot, but in the past the new one was in short supply. Now the new one is available- and it also requires a second shot, shortly after the first one. Everyone I know who has had the series has had a low grade fever and flu like symptoms for from twelve to twenty four hours after said shot. Not something I look forward to, believe me. But twelve hours of discomfort (even misery) to avoid not having the shingles? It is seriously a no brainer.
Which reminds me that I have no idea when I've had a tetanus or an MMR or other booster, except that it's been very, very long time. Do I need to have that checked out as well? Actually I had a tetanus shot in 2012 when I sewed through my finger. I guess I should bring all this up with the doctor at my appointment as well.
Yes, the things we do for our health. All worth it, each and every time. And yes, if there is a vaccine or a shot, I will always, always always get it. Period. The end.
My husband had shingles so of course he got the old shot. But now the new shot is out and it's very expensive and insurance won't cover it. They told him to wait until he was 65 (next year) and get it through medicare. It will save him about $400 and it will be covered. Whew. Yes, it is a no brainer Barb, shingles is not fun at all.Glad you are home safe and sound.

DeleteI have to check out whether I need to get any booster shots in my vaccinations too. I always get a flu shot every year. My Rare One got the new shingles vaccine and I don't remember her feeling poorly at all after the two shots.

DeleteI just turned 60, so I became eligible for the shingles vaccine. Had the 1st Shingrix vaccing in my left arm and the flu shot in my right arm. Just a tiny sting in each and she must have hit a small capillary because both sites bled a tiny bit and had a small bruise. No problem with the flu shot site unless I accidentally bumped it where the bruise was.
ReplyDeleteThe shingles shot arm was a little sore... got a 2-inch red spot that was very warm to the touch. Woke me up the first night pulsing (not throbbing) a bit, but not enough for me to get up and take any ibuprofen or anything, and probably only happened because I'm a side-sleeper and both arms had a bruise, so when I rolled over on either side....
I had no flu-like symptoms from the shingles shot, but it did feel like there was a small knot in the red patch along with the bruise. On the evening of day 2, I put a small ice pack on the red area - I'll do that on day 1 when I get the next shot (pharmacist said 2nd shot should be within 2-6 months of 1st shot), because it really helped with the swelling and inflammation.
I'm a retired federal employee with BCBS Basic - both shots were free.

DeleteBarb, I was wondering if I was due for my TDAP, too. Called the local health department and they were able to tell me exactly when I had my last one. They recommend boosters every 7-10 yrs. Glad you made it home safely. It will be good to get all your medical stuff over with!

I'm still waiting for my shingles, still about a 3 month wait due to low supply here. "I'm on the list". I had a new pneumonia vaccine about 3 months ago and funny that I kind of forgot about it but about three days later got flu symptoms of headache, aching all over and the chills! While tossing around in bed I bumped my arm where it was sore from the shot, and reminded my spacey mind that well maybe that's why I'm sick. Couple days later I was fine and still feel that vaccine is worth it. So who knows, everyone's different. I'm still vacillating on the flu vaccine, and will see.
ReplyDeleteI’m a Nurse and had to be tested for MMR every couple of years.My immunity wore off three times! Evidently we do not really know how long a vaccine lasts. There is MUCH research on vaccines we are not aware of! I no longer take vaccines but when I worked I had to stay immune so I would not harm a mom or baby—my field was women’s health. I had to have a TITER drawn..and that’s how you can see if you need an MMR booster if you take them. I had to be revaccinated every few years al through my career!!!
