Grace, Bad Ass Women, and Stepping up to the Plate

I tell you what, I seem to be able to hurt myself and not even I remember did it. I've always been that gal that just looked at the wall and got a bruise, but these days it' even worse.

On Sunday, very early in the morning I got up to take a middle aged bathroom break. I stood up, ready to take a step (my bathroom is like eight steps from my bed, I set it up that way), and promptly almost hit the ground. My leg and ankle, especially the back area of my ankle was so painful I could hardly move. To say that making it to the bathroom, mainly in the dark, while hobbling, was an experience-well that would be an understatement. Mind you, I did no walking, don't remember hurting myself and was (and maybe am) totally mystified. The only thing different I did in my day (and it did not hurt at the time), was a new seres of ankle and leg exercises done from the chair. I suppose I did them wrong maybe? Who knows?

Anyway, when I woke up  much later for the day, I somehow got myself dressed and drugged. Climbing in and out of the shower was out of the question. I put on the new sketcher shoes figuring they would be okay with my church pants and support the leg a bit. Then I  limped painfully out of the house (at about a step every eight seconds or so), parked in the closest handicapped space to the church door and somehow got into a pew, where I sat until time for communion. I think they were wondering if I needed it to come to me, but I somehow made that short journey. Two mornings later I am much better, but still walking very carefully and the leg is very, very sore. I've been going to be early just so I can get it on a couple pillows-and binge on Jack Ryan on Amzon Prime.

Today I finally hobbled (hobbled, limped, but no longer crawled) out of the house on five dollar Tuesdays to go see the new Terminator movie. Hence the bad ass women. For those who care about the movies, this takes place after the second-there is no Judgment ay and three of the four hero/put that terminator in the ground type of folks are women. Good for James Cameron!  And for those wondering, yes it was worth the price of entrance, popcorn, water and m&ms (I mix them with the popcorn and make a trail mix kind of thing). The second best part were the great previews.  Yes, I probably wipe that five dollar Tuesday entrance out with the snacks, but I usually have saved gift cards/rewards or else I forfeit the above!

Tomorrow my nesting at home time is done, I'm off to lunch at our local Creole restaurant (shrimp bisque and salad from the 9 dollar special  for me because everyone else here is allergic to shrimp), an abbreviated knitting session afterward and breakfast for dinner at the Village Inn (where I always choose eggs Bennie). Wednesday always seems to be the day I have the most going on, however that happens. I intend to be very careful and walk as little as possible for at least one more day.  I really, really hate to do two meals out in one day, but both will be ten dollar specials and mainly healthy if I can avoid the darn beignets. And I do so try to rotate the gal group events so they happen on every day ofthe week.

On Thursday I'm stepping (or perhaps still hobbling, who knows) up to take on a new commitment. I'm just not sure how big it is yet. This is the time of year I commit my finances, time and talents to the church, and I'm trying to do five percent of each of the above. The financial is easy to measure, the time is about eight hours a week, and the talent-well, how do I track five percent of the time I spend making stuff or cooking stuff? That part is too hard for my brain. We have an "outreach committee" which is active (this church is involved in about ten causes and looking to take on more). I've been asked to join this month's meetings where the primary discussions will be whether to take on Meals of Wheels and or another program that helps the folks with low income. Yes I'm jumping back into that weekly commitment thing again.

Frugally and energy wise,  I haven't had to access the freezer as such or commit to any cooking effort for a few days. Other people have gotten lasagna. My sister got stewing beef but turned it into a double recipe of chili cornbread, and for tonight she got bagels, lox, cream cheese and avocado. I love it when I eat well and the budget stays low, ya know?

  1. I hope your ankle feels better soon!

And here's my frugal tip of the day -- carry a big purse and sneak snacks from home into the movie theatre. A bottle of water, a little baggie of M & Ms from a bigger bag bought at the supermarket or from the bulk bins, microwaved popcorn put in a plastic bag with a twist tie -- bring them out once the theatre is dark. It saves bigga bigga bucks!

    1. It does. But I come from a family in the business and the food is how they make their money (movies dont make theaters money) so I try and alternate that with buying the stuff.

  2. I'm hobbling/limping right along with you Barbara:) I had a foot surgery and am finally out of the walking boot and into shoes but still working on getting back to walking normally.

  3. I laughed at the bruise situation....Harvey quite often looks at my arms or legs and says "Ouch, where did you get that bruise?" I tell him that I have no idea where or how I got it.

I do hope your ankle gets better very soon.

    God bless.

  4. That is kind of a mystery how your foot and ankle were injured but good to hear you are healing. You managed to get out and about and have some fun in spite of your hobbling.

  6. One of my friends showed up at a church lunch with her whole face black and blue. She woke up on the kitchen floor and had hit cabinets as she fell. Her sister awoke on the bedroom floor of her house, crawled back in bed. The next morning she could not walk as she had broken her ankle. I fall and have no breaks or bruises! Thankfully, you are hobbling. You probably did one too many leg lifts or whatever.

    1. Whatever it IS with this foot it is much more than leg lifts that injured me,lol. But I am grateful it's not worse.

  8. I love how you live your life so deliberately with all your planning ahead. I tend to drift.

I hope your foot gets better soon. I have had a few similar things happen in my sleep to my leg. I've taken to putting a cane next to my bed out of fear it will happen again and I won't get to the bathroom in time.

  9. I hope you feel better soon. I often think about how much you do even given your physical limitations and it is impressive.
